Earthing
conductors connect all of the non current carrying parts of an
electrical system, or any metallic parts in the vicinity of the
electrical system together. These parts include conduits, enclosures,
supports and other metallic objects. This earthing system has two purposes:
1. Safety.
The
earthing conductor system provides a low impedance path for fault
currents to flow. This allows the full current to be detected by
overcurrent protective devices (fuses and circuit breakers), safely
clearing the fault quickly.
2. Power quality. The
earthing system allows all equipment to have the same reference
voltage. This helps electronic equipment operation and helps prevent
the flow of extraneous current on communication lines, seals and
other connections.
3.
Other applications
include broadcast equipment safety and RF grounding; Audio
equipment grounding to exclude earth loop faults and extraneous energy
hum. I.T. applications such as rack -mounted server systems need
clean, tight earth bonds in order to eliminate spurious signals which
can cause spikes in data transfer, resulting in corrupted computer
files.
Earthing conductors include earth leads, earth cable, earth braids and connectors.
